I am an artist and sculptor living in the Berkshires, in Massachusetts.
Over the last 8 years my husband and I, with the help of our 7 year old son and many friends have turned an old farm into a vibrant garden: perennials, orchards, wildflowers meadows, more formal gardens, nut hedges, and repopulating woods into a hardwood forest. It is my largest scale art project, and it is very much a work in progress.
At the same time, I am fortunate to be the estate gardener and designer for several large, wonderful estates and “cottages” in the Berkshires. These majestic gardens, along with my own smaller scaled personal garden, have been the palette for most of my artistic energy.
However, in the winters when there is less work outside, I continue making sculpture and doing other personal projects. Several years ago, one project was to make myself some jewelry. That next spring, one of my estate clients saw me wearing a necklace, and asked if she could borrow it to wear to a big event in New York; she came back with requests from her friends to own the same piece. And so after a little while I found myself making and selling my work to private collectors.
For the last 5 years I have been slowly increasing my output as I built on my knowledge from sculpture; carving, casting, drawing, molding, building & etc. I am a graduate of the Museum School in Boston, which formalized my lifelong foundation in sculpture and metalwork. Many techniques cross over to jewelry making; I am also fortunate to have several friends who are lifelong scholars and artisans in the goldsmithing and jewelry world who have helped me and joined in to work in our small workshop.
The pieces are all very comfortable. The necklaces move, i.e. they're jointed to move with the body; earrings are likewise subtly kinetic. The rings are comfortable and wearable all day. We are very careful and thorough in all of our construction; the pieces are well engineered and nice to the touch; we make our own chain; in short we are aiming to make heirlooms. Our clients love wearing the work, they feel really connected to the pieces, they're more than jewelry, they've said (unprompted) that it's the thrill of your own piece of personal intimate artwork, every day.
We're just starting to have stores and galleries take us on, and things seem to be moving a bit. Despite the economy of the last year, we've continued to have sales and interest in our work, and this year looks to be increasing as well.
